2003

Building foundational experience in advanced manufacturing.

After an eight-year experimental mechanics research career at IIT, Dr. Sciammarella joined the IIT Research Institute to tackle refurbishing worn and corroded Naval components via an automated laser cladding cell (ALC). The ALC yielded two R&D 100 awards in 2004 & 2005. Two ALC systems were delivered, one to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard the other to Spider Inc.

2007

Building foundational experience for research & education in advanced manufacturing

Dr. Sciammarella joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering and, over the next 12 years, established the Advanced Research in Materials & Manufacturing Lab and the Maker Space, bringing in more than $2.5 million in research in advanced manufacturing. His lab serves as a training ground for the future manufacturing workforce.
